For the second year in a row the Kahnawake Mohawks are the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League Champions and are headed to the President’s Cup, the Canadian Senior B Lacrosse Championships. The Mohawks completed the four-game sweep of the Indians with a 15-3 win Friday night and a 10-4 win Saturday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.
The Mohawks came into Friday night’s game looking to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series and the Indians were hoping to stop the bleeding and come back with a win. Charlie Goodleaf scored first for the Indians in a wild first period at 6:12. Then at 6:36 Jeff Zywicki netted the equalizer after being set up by Kelly Sullivan and Louis Alfred. Colin Diabo would then give the Mohawks a 2-1 lead. Indians rookie Logan Kane, playing in his first game of the series, scored at 7:05 to tie it up at 2-2.
Kaniat Deer then put his team ahead 3-2 when he scored at 8:52 of the first period. Alfred then tied it up at 3-3 midway through the period and Callum Crawford would give the Mohawks a 4-3 lead at 12:49. With 19 seconds left in the period Curry Rice netted the Mohawks fifth goal of the game.
The Mohawks would continue to dominate the scoring for the rest of the game as John Preece would stand on his head the rest of the game. Preece would stop 42 of 45 Indians shots. Scoring for the Mohawks the rest of the game were Crawford, Bobby McBride (3), Sullivan (3), Alfred, and Curtis Diabo (2).
The Mohawks were looking to end the sweep on Saturday night, which they did after a 10-4 win over the Indians. Sitting out for the Mohawks were Crawford, Pat Collins and Bobby McBride. The Indians showed up to the game short-handed with players like Winston Goodleaf, Jonathan Kane, Cody Delormier and Troy Nolan sidelined with injuries.
Early on in the game Angus Horne was ejected after he tried to fight with Sullivan. In the process he removed his jersey, which resulted in his ejection. Then both captains, Mohawks’ Louis Alfred and Indians’ Eddy Dickson, had a good fight. Dickson was also thrown out for removing his jersey.
Then at 8:45 of the second period a penalty was levied to the Indians and an argument unfolded on the floor which caused referee Grenville Killoran to call the came, with the Mohawks leading 2-0. However a discussion with both teams, the referees and QSLL President Claude Chapleau it was decided to continue the game.
The Presidents Cup takes place in Six Nations this year with the Mohawks playing their first game on Monday, August 24 against the representative from the Iroquois Lacrosse Association.
