The Kahnawake Mohawks downed the Caughnawaga Indians 13-7 to take a 2-0 series lead in the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League finals. More than 800 fans showed up at the Kahnawake Sports Complex Wednesday night to see the second game of the best-of-seven championship series.

The Indians were hoping for a strong start to capitalize on some of the momentum they built in a close Game 1 Monday night and that’s just what they got. Ben Green opened the scoring at 3:38 to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. But the Mohawks wouldn’t be held off the scoreboard for very long. Callum Crawford netted his first of the game at 5:22 to tie it up at 1-1. Jeff Zywicki would score at 10:37 and then at 12:35 to give the Mohawks a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission.

Curry Rice would then give the Mohawks a 4-1 lead at 3:38 of the second period. Chad Norton would cut the Mohawks lead in half to 4-2 when he scored unassisted at 4:43. Mohawks defenseman Pat Collins would intercept an Indians pass and run down the floor and score to give the Mohawks a 5-2 lead at 6:01. Norton and Bordeau would then set up Eddy Dickson to cut the Mohawks lead to 5-3 at 7:31.

Collins would then score his second of the game after catching a pass from Louis Alfred to double the Indians score to 6-3. DJ Serr would then extend the Mohawks lead to 7-3 at 10:24. Thirty seconds later Dickson would get his second of the game to get to within three at 7-4. Alfred would then score two strait goals, followed by Zywicki and Ian Crawford to close out the period, giving the Mohawks an 11-4 lead.

The third period started out much like the second with Callum Crawford netting his second of the contest. At 7:19 of the third Norton would get his second and final goal of the game, which was quickly followed by a goal from Kirby Joe Diabo to cut the Mohawks lead to 12-6. At 12:37 Mohawks goalie John Preece lobbed a pass to Bobby McBride who scored on the breakaway, scoring the Mohawks’ 13th goal. Dickson closed out the scoring with just 51 seconds left in the game.

This game turned into a chippy affair with 63 minutes in penalties be levied against the two teams (Mohawks with 37 and the Indians with 26). A fight almost broke out in the second period when Callum Crawford was driving to the net and Kaniat Deer dove at his knees and Greg Diabo came to his teammates defense. Early in the third, Indians defenseman Ben Pinsonneault was ejected after he threw Crawford to the ground and pounded him. Later in the third Deer and Kyle Laverty exchanged blows in a well-fought fight.

These teams take to the floor again Friday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex at 8 p.m. for Game 3. Game 4 will be played on Saturday night at 8 p.m.

The Indians got things started early in the game with Jonathan Kane and Kaniat Deer giving the Indians a 2-0 lead by the 4:01 mark of the first period. Louis Alfred put the Mohawks on the board at 6:01 on the power play after with Jeff Zywicki and Callum Crawford setting him up for a one-timer along the goal line.

Ben Green would tie it up at 4-4 with just over a minute to go in the first frame.

The first frame was also filled with a lot of aggression as both teams were looking to set the tone for the game. Early on in the period Wahiio Jacobs and Charlie Goodleaf received matching minors for unnecessary roughness. While midway through the period Mikey Stacey and Diabo each received five for fighting and an additional two for unnecessary roughness.

The Mohawks came out strong in the second period with Alfred, Zywicki and Bobby McBride each scored to give the Mohawks a 7-4 lead by the 3:29 mark of the period. Then at 7:32 Deer would net his second of the game from the Indians to stop the bleeding and make it 7-5. The Mohawks though would not be deterred and got consecutive goals from Alfred and Crawford to take a 9-5 lead midway through the second.

At 11:45 Green would answer back and his goal was quickly followed by one from Kane at 12:56 to bring the Indians to within two at 9-7. At the 18:00 mark Tontie McComber would make it 10-7 for the Mohawks to close out the period.

It took nearly five minutes of play for someone to score in the third period, and the goal came off the stick of Indians forward Kirby Joe Diabo at 4:48, making the score 10-8. Then at 14:11 and 14:37 McComber and McBride each scored to make it 13-10. In other games this season this would have sunk the Indians, but not tonight. At 16:50, Green scored his third of the game to make it 13-11, then Norton netted his second at 17:09 to make it 13-12 and the pressure was on. The Mohawks responded in kind with goals from Rice and Zywicki to close out the game at 15-12.

The Finals: War on the floor!

Picture
Greg Horn 27.JUL.09

The battle of Kahnawake begins tonight at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex as the Kahnawake Mohawks and the Caughnawaga Indians square of for the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League Championship.

This is the fourth year in a row that these two franchises have met up for the right to represent Quebec at the President’s Cup (although the first two times the teams were the LaSalle Brasseurs and the Longueil Patriotes).

The Mohawks finished the season with a perfect 16-0 record to earn a bye into the QSLL Finals, while the Indians finished the season with a 10-5-1 to earn a date with the Vaudreuil Dinomytes in the first round. The Indians promptly dismantled the Dinomytes in a four game sweep by scores of 17-7, 11-7, 12-5 and 8-6. The Indians wrapped up their series against the Dinomytes on Friday night in Akwesasne.

“Wished we could have had a few more days to rest but we have the momentum right now,” Indians General Manager Patrick Lavigne told KahnawakeNews.com. “The loss of Logan Kane for a 2-game suspension will be felt no doubt but Logan will be back to finish the series. Just happy the final series can be played at the Sports Complex, both for the players and fans. I wish good luck to both teams.”

Kane was suspended for two games following a first period fight in Game 4 against Vaudreuil defenseman Nick Boehler. Although Kane will be missed in the first two games of this best-of-seven series, the Indians will be getting back another of their top defenders in Angus Horne. The stalwart defenseman missed games three and four of the Indians series against Vaudreuil after a face-masking incident with Andrew MacKay in game two.

Although the Mohawks have dominated the season series, the Indians can take advantage of the 12-day layoff the Mohawks have had and come out with a win tonight. The Mohawks last game was Wednesday, July 15 against the Dinomytes, which they won 20-4.

Game 2 takes place on Wednesday, with Game 3 on Friday and Game 4 on Saturday. All game times are 8 p.m. If necessary Game 5 will take place Monday, August 3, Game 6 on Wednesday, August 5 and Game 7 on Thursday, August 6. All the games will be played at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.

Indians look to finish off Dinomytes tonight

Picture
Greg Horn 24.JUL.09

The Caughnawaga Indians can eliminate the Vaudreuil Dinomytes with a win at the A’nowara’kó:wa Arena tonight.

The Indians took a commanding 3-0 series lead with a 12-7 victory at home on Wednesday night. Although the resilient Dinomytes did show the Indians that they were not going to give up, even though they showed up with only ten runners.

The first period started off slow, with the Dinomytes trying to trap the Indians into a slower paced game. And it paid off at the 6:22 mark when Stewart McFarlane scored to give the Dinomytes a 1-0 lead. Then at 10:03 the Indians struck back on a goal by Cody Delormier to tie it at 1-1. At 12:44, Indians captain Eddy Dickson gave his team a 2-1 lead. That lead was short-lived though, as Mitch Young tied it up at 2-2 for Vaudreuil to close out the scoring for the period.

The second period was played much like the first, with the Dinomytes controlling the pace of the game. Both teams had their offensive chances but none would find the back of the net until 9:12 of the period when Ben Green gave the Indians a 3-2 lead. It would seem that’s all the Indians would need to open the floor gates. Just 34 seconds later Heath Bordeau would give the Indians a 4-2 lead, and Charlie Goodleaf would score at 12:56 to make it 5-2.

Shako Swamp cut the Indians lead down to 5-3 at 13:44. The next goal would be a critical as it could make it a one goal game and give the Dinomytes life, or it would take their momentum away. At 14:35 Green would score again to make it 6-3. Kirby Joe Diabo, Bordeau and Norton would close out the scoring for the period giving the Indians a dominating 9-3 lead over the Dinomytes.

The third period was much like the second with the Indians outscoring the Dinomytes 3-2 with goals coming from Jonathan Kane, Dickson and Norton. Vaudreuil’s goals came from McFarlane and Swamp.

Should the Indians complete the sweep of the Dinomytes tonight (game time 8 p.m.) they will advance to the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League finals against the Kahnawake Mohawks next week. Should the Dinomytes manage to hang on, Game 5 will be played on Sunday night at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.

Greg Horn 21.JUL.09

The Caughnawaga Indians travelled to Akwesasne Monday night to take on the Vaudreuil Dinomytes in Game 2 of their best-of-seven semifinal series at the A’nowara’kó:wa Arena.

The Indians were looking to take down the Dinomytes easily and take a commanding series lead. The Dinomytes had other plans though.  Just 1:28 into the first period Vaudreuil’s Mitch Young gave his team a 1-0 lead. It took until 5:17 for Caughnawaga to tie it up at 1-1 on a goal from Chad Norton. However, the Dinomytes kept on coming and by the 7:52 mark sported a 4-1 lead on goals by Shako Swamp, Andrew MacKay and Stewart McFarlane. Caughnawaga’s Logan Kane cut the lead to 4-2 at 13:35, and the scoring wouldn’t change for the rest of the period.

After a lackluster first period, the Indians came out firing in the second with goals coming from Charlie Goodlead, Troy Nolan and Cody Delormier to take a 5-4 lead by the midway point of the period. Swamp evened things up at the 12:38 mark and MacKay gave the Dinomytes a 6-5 lead to close out the period.

Norton would score around the three-minute mark of the third to tie it up at 6-6. Less than a minute later, Kane would give the Indians the lead back at 7-6. But MacKay squared things up at 4:39. At 10:01, Ben Green would score on a pass from Kirby Joe Diabo to take the lead again at 8-7 and the Indians would never look back, Norton, Delormier and Pat Hargreaves would round out the scoring for the Indians, who would win 11-7.

The two teams next square off tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex for Game 3. That game can be heard on K103 Kahnawake. Game 4 will take place on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Akwesasne.

Picture
Greg Horn 17.JUL.09

The Caughnawaga Indians finished the regular season with a 10-5-1 record after downing the Massena Muskies 12-11 in overtime last night. The win broke the Indians two-game losing streak, where they lost 12-10 to the Vaudreuild Dinomytes and 12-7 to the Kahnawake Mohawks.

The Muskies opened the scoring off a goal by Travis Thompson at 5:44 of the first period. The Indians were quick to respond though, with Ben Green scoring just 13 seconds later. Then at 9:15 Kaniat Deer gave the Indians a 2-1 lead. The Muskies would be the ones to answer back quickly this time as Raweras Mitchell tied it up at 2-2 just 19 seconds later. Winston Goodleaf would give the Indians a 3-2 lead at the 10:56 mark. Both Deer and Green would each score their second of the game to close out the period with the Indians leading 5-2.

Kirby Joe Diabo would score the Indians fourth strait goal at 2:35 of the second period to give the Indians a convincing 6-2 lead. Ryan Oakes would cut the Indians lead in half when he scored the Muskies third goal at 6:03 of the second. At 12:53 Chad Norton would score his first of the game to give the Indians a 7-3 lead, which was followed up by Goodleaf’s second of the game at 14:45. Chad Squire scored two consecutive goals for the Muskies to make it 8-5. Heath Bordeau would notch his first of the game to close out the second period with the Indians leading 9-5.

The Muskies came out for the third period with something to prove. Joe Hall would score two, at 1:06 and 3:24, to make it 9-7. Norton would give the Indians some breathing room at 6:22 to give the Indians a 10-7 lead. But the Muskies would not be deterred and Mitchell would cut the Indians lead to 10-8 at the 7:53 mark. Bordeau scored his second of the game at 12:59 to give the Indians a 11-8 lead.

In the last seven minutes of the period the Muskies continued to put on the pressure. Kariwate Mitchell scored at 13:32 of the period to cut the Indians lead to 11-9. Corey Thomas would put the Muskies to within one at 16:15. Then at 16:58, Hall would tie it up at 11-11, and neither team could put in another, forcing overtime.

The ten-minute overtime period was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with neither able to capitalize on their opportunities. However, Diabo would net the game winner for the Indians with just 41 seconds left in the game.

The Indians take on the Vaudreuil Dinomytes tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex in the first game of their best-of-seven semifinal series.

Indians offense explodes, downs Dinomytes

Picture
Greg Horn 19.JUL.09

The Caughnawaga Indians were looking for a strong showing in the first game of the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League semifinals against the Vaudreuil Dinomytes, and that’s just what they got.

The Indians were looking to avenge a 12-10 loss to the Dinomytes on July 8 and to send a strong statement that this was not going to be an easy series for their opponents. The Dinomytes, on the other hand, were looking for a strong showing despite only having nine runners.

Vaudreuil opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the game on a goal by Andrew MacKay. The Indians did not let that deter them and Kirby Joe Diabo tied it up at 1-1 at 1:55. Chad Norton would give the Indians the lead at the 2:49 mark. Charlie Goodlead would give the Indians a 3-1 lead at 8:57 and that’s how the score would stand going into the first intermission.

The Indians came out into the second period on fire, with Logan Kane scoring just 18 seconds into the frame to give his team a 4-1 advantage. Stewart McFarlane would respond for the Dinomytes at 1:47 to cut the lead to 4-2. At 3:41 Kane and Ahsennontie Diabo would set up Kirby Joe Diabo to give the Indians a 5-2 lead. This was followed by goals from Norton, Eddy Dickson and Angus Horne to extend the Indians lead to 8-2.

At 11:25, Robbie Woods would make it 8-3, but Heath Bordeau and Kirby Joe would each sore to make it 10-3. MacKay finished off the scoring for the second period at 17:58 to cut the Indians lead to 10-4.

Fatigue set in for the Dinomytes and the Indians capitalized in the third period. Goals for the Indians came off the sticks of Pat Hargreaves, Dickson (2), Kane (2) and Kaniat Deer (2). Ryan Seymour, MacKay and McFarlane would each score for the Dinomytes. The final score was 17-7.

The two teams will meet up for Game 2 tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the A’nowara’kó:wa Arena on Cornwall Island in Akwesasne. Game 3 will take place Wednesday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.

Mohawks complete season series sweep of Indians

Picture
Greg Horn 13.JUL.09

The Kahnawake Mohawks improved to 15-0 on the season with a convincing 12-7 win over the Caughnawaga Indians this past weekend.

Saturday’s matchup was the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the two local teams – with the Mohawks sweeping the regular season series. This game though, was by far, the most entertaining game of the season between the two teams.

Kahnawake’s Callum Crawford caught a pass from Bobby McBride and buried it past Indians netminder Alex Fortier on just the Mohawks first shot of the game 34 seconds into the game. This could have meant big trouble for the Indians, but Fortier wasn’t phased and played strongly from that point onward.

The score would remain 1-0 for the Mohawks until 6:12 when Caughnawaga’s Kaniat Deer netted his first of the game to tie it up at 1-1. Then at 11:56 the Indians took a 2-1 lead off a goal by Heath Bordeau. Then McBride scored for the Mohawks at 15:39 to tie it up at 2-2. And then Tontie McComber scored his 17th goal of the season at 16:51 of the first to give the Mohawks a 3-2 lead going into the intermission.

McBride scored his second of the game around the five-minute mark to give the Mohawks at 4-2 lead. Less than a minute later, at 5:56, Deer would score his second of the game to make it 4-3. Then at 7:10 Deer and Kirby Joe Diabo would set up Indians captain Eddy Dickson to tie it all up at 4-4. At 7:41 Colin Diabo connected with McComber and Curry Rice to score his fifth goal of the season giving the Mohawks a 5-4 lead. Winston Goodleaf scored at 15:06 to tie it up at 5-5 for the Indians.

However, less than a minute later Mohawks captain Louis Alfred scored to make it 6-5 for the Mohawks. Al Jones would then get the ball in the corner, drive to the net, back off and look for a teammate to pass to, then pivot and beat Fortier low to give the Mohawks a two-goal lead at 7-5 to close out the second period.

Just 29 seconds into the third period Clay Kirby would pass it up to Crawford for his second of the game, giving the Mohawks an 8-5 lead. Mohawks would get two more unanswered goals from Kelly Sullivan and Rice to take a 10-5 lead. Then with 14:08 left in the third Bordeau would score for the Indians to cut the lead to 10-6. Just after the ensuing faceoff, the power went out at the Kahnawake Sports Complex due to the severe thunderstorm raging outside. The power was off for only a few seconds, but it forced another intermission as the lights over the floor had to warm back up before coming back on.

When play resumed the Mohawks took back the momentum as Sullivan scored his second of the game at 16:24 and McBride completed his hat trick at 17:49. The Indians, though, did not give up and Deer completed his hat trick at 19:17. The final score was 12-7.

The Mohawks complete the regular season on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Sports Complex as they take on the Vaudreuil Dinomytes. The Indians conclude their regular season on Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Sports Complex when they take on the Massena Muskies.

Dinomytes explode, down Indians

Greg Horn 09.JUL.09

It was a game that the Vaudreuil Dinomytes needed a strong outing and they got it.

Wednesday night the Dinomytes travelled to Kahnawake to take on the Caughnawaga Indians in a preview for the Semi-Final of the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League playoffs. Going into the game the Indians were coming off an eight game winning streak and the Dinomytes were winless against other QSLL teams.

The Dinomytes came out firing, with team captain Rajinder Wasson scoring the first goal of the game just 1:15 into the game. Then 29 seconds later Mitch Young gave the Dinomytes a 2-0 lead. It was midway through the period before Caughnawaga’s Ben Green put his team on the board to make it 2-1 of a spectacular one-timer from a pass from Eddy Dickson.

At 13:31 Vaudreuil’s Jeff Salmon restored the Dinomytes two-goal lead at 3-1.With 5:01 left in the first period Caughnawaga’s Kirby Joe Diabo cut the lead to 3-2. Green then returned the favour to Dickson and set him up for a one-timer of his own to tie the game up at 3-3 at 16:08. The Dinomytes took the lead again at 17:03 after Salmon scored his second of the game. Then with just 29 second left in the period Caughnawaga’s Chad Norton was able to tie it back up at 4-4.

Wasson would again give his team the lead at 2:16 of the second period. Jonathan Kane would score his seventh goal of the season at 5:02 of the second period to lock it up at 5-5. Cody Delormier would then give the Indians their first lead of the game at 8:01 of the second frame. However, the Dinomytes would score three unanswered goals from Shako Swamp, Wasson and Swamp again to give the Dinomytes an 8-6 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the second period.

At 15:53 Dickson scored his second of the game to make the score 8-7. However, Vaudreuil’s Stewart McFarlane gave his team a 9-7 lead at 17:08 to close out second period scoring.

The Dynomites continued their scoring into the third period, with Salmon scoring at 1:40 and Swamp netting his third of the game at 2:32. Then at 3:18 Kaniat Deer shoveled a backhand past Vaudreuil’s Matt McFarlane to make it 11-8. Dickson then scored his third of the game after receiving a pass from Norton and pivoting at the mouth of the crease and beating McFarlane clean over the left shoulder making the score 11-9 at 12:57. Then at 13:53 Swamp buried his fourth goal of the game to give the Dinomytes a 12-9 lead.

As the clock was winding down, the Indians pulled goaltender Pascal Nolet and tried for a late-game rally. At 18:37 Green notched his second of the game – 38th of the season – to bring the Indians to within two. The Dinomytes though, were able to hold off the Indians potent offence, which has managed to score 188 goals this season, to prevail by a score of 12-10.

The Indians take on the Kahnawake Mohawks Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex and their last matchup of the regular season.

Vermont voyages to Kahnawake

Picture
Greg Horn 01.JUL.09

The Vermont Voyageurs travelled to Kahnawake this weekend to take on both the Kahnawake Mohawks and the Caughnawaga Indians.

The games were exhibition, but counted in the standings for the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League standings. The Voyageurs are a possible expansion team for the QSLL for next season.

First up for the Vermont squad was the Mohawks on Saturday night at 8 p.m. The Mohawks didn’t dress some of their regulars, like Callum Crawford, Jeff Zywicki and Lance Mitchell, and instead dressed juniors Karahkwanó:ron Two-Axe, Iohahiio Goodleaf and Só:se Regis.

The game started out slow, with each team feeling each other out then Vermont opened the scoring at 4:05 of the first period on a goal by Steve Cousins. But the Mohawks were quick to respond as Al Jones netted his first of the game at 5:24. Then the floodgates opened with the Mohawks scoring eight unanswered goals to close out the period. The game started out much the same as Vermont’s game against the Mohawks the previous night, with both teams feeling each other out. Kirby Joe Diabo, Chad Norton and Brock Freeman would all score in the period to give the Indians a 4-0 lead.

The second period was much like the first, with goals coming from Kaniat Deer and Logan Kane during the first half of the period to give the Indians a 6-0 lead. Evan Roberts put the Voyageurs on the board at 11:02 making it 6-1.At 12-02 Norton would score his second of the game making it 7-1. Indians rookie Logan Kane would score two at 16:58 and 17:39 to make it 9-1 for the Indians. Vermont would close out the scoring for the period on two goals, one from Pudden at 18:04 and one from Ripley Harrison to make it 9-3.

Kirby Joe Diabo would score his second of the game just 41 seconds into the third period giving the Indians a 10-3 lead. Just 25 seconds later though Harrison scored his second of the game making it 10-4. At 2:05 Diabo would complete his hat trick, but Farrell would find the back of the net at 3:34 to make it 11-5.
