The Canadian Lacrosse Association announced recently that the host venue of the 2010 President’s Cup has been awarded to the Burnaby Burrards. The national tournament will be played August 17 – 21, 2010 at Bill Copeland Arena.

“The BCLA is pleased to have been awarded the 2010 President’s Cup to the Burnaby Burrards of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse League. I wish all of the teams the best of luck,” said B.C. Lacrosse Association president Sohen Gill.

Burrards general manager Shawn Joinson said awarding the event hosting to a Lower Mainland team is great news for lacrosse fans all across the province.

“We’re very excited to have been named as the host venue for the 2010 championships,” Joinson said. “There is a thriving lacrosse community in British Columbia and we expect to see a great fan turnout.”

The five-day series will feature the top seven teams in the Senior ‘B’ division from across Canada clashing in a round-robin style tournament.

“The calibre of competition will be superb,” Joinson said. “This is a really fantastic opportunity to see the very best players in the world compete at this level.”

The Burrards are one of the Lower Mainland’s best-known lacrosse franchises. The roots of the club go back to 1969 when the Senior ‘B’ team from Vancouver’s Killarney neighbourhood joined the Inter-City Lacrosse League, the predecessor of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association.

In 1999, the Vancouver Vipers renamed themselves the Vancouver Burrards – reclaiming the heritage of the nickname, which has long been symbolic of lacrosse in Vancouver.

Lacrosse fans in the Kahnawake area were treated to a great weekend of lacrosse this past weekend as the Kahnawake Mohawks took on both the Massena Muskies and the Cornwall Island Redman. But the real treat was the St. Regis Indians took on the Brampton Excelsiors of the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Major Series Lacrosse League.

The Brampton Excelsiors are the defending Mann Cup Champions, as the top Senior A team in Canada and feature professional lacrosse players as Dan Dawson, Colin Doyle, Brodie Merrill, Cam Woods and Anthony Cosmo. The Indians feature players such as Athan Ianucci, John Tavares, Mike Thompson and rookie goaltender Angus Goodleaf, of Kahnawake. The games were played in Kahnawake due to the border issues in Akwesasne, which led to the closure of the border and the bridge.

The first game of the weekend took place on Saturday night at 9 p.m. after the Mohawks downed the Muskies 19-8. The Indians went into the game undefeated at 4-0 and were hoping to leave Kahnawake with a perfect 6-0 record.

The first ten minutes of the game was evenly played with the score going back and forth. At one point the game was tied at 3-3, but then the Excelsiors would score four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead into the first intermission.

The Indians scored early in the second and midway through the period would come to within two goals. But Brampton scored three more unanswered goals to increase their lead to 10-5. The game ended 13-7 for Brampton, who snapped the Indians’ unbeaten streak.

The following afternoon at 2 p.m. the two teams would faceoff again. This game started out much like the previous nights game with each team trading goals in the first. However, it was the Indians who managed to break a 3-3 tie with about a minute to go in the first period. Brampton would pull their goalie after a timeout in the dying seconds in hopes of tying up the game to end the period. However, the Indians broke up the play and were able to score on the empty net and take a 5-3 lead into the second period.

The momentum was all in St. Regis’ favour in the second period. The Indians took an 8-3 lead on goals scored on a delayed penalty, while shorthanded and on a breakaway. This all by the halfway point of the second period. Then Brampton’s Paul Dawson squared off against Indians’ Dave Campbell. Dawson clearly won the decision as he completely dominated the fight. The fight managed to light a fire under Brampton’s bench and the Excelsiors scored two to end the period 8-5.

Brampton would continue to score into the third period scoring two in the first four minutes of the frame to make it 8-7. The Indians were not phased and continued to score two more to make it 10-7 with just under five minutes to go in the game. Brampton would not give up and goals from Mike Hominuck, Josh Sanderson and Colin Doyle would lock the score at 10-10 to close out regulation. The Indians would triumph in overtime scoring four unanswered goals to finish off the Excelsiors 14-10.
