The Caughnawaga Indians narrowly took down the Massena Muskies Friday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex by a score of 13-10. Although the Indians prevailed by three goals, it really was anyone’s game until the last half of the third period.
The Muskies came out firing and got things rolling early. At the opening faceoff, Kirby Joe Diabo won the draw, but no one caught the ball. He chased it deep into the Muskies zone, but couldn’t gain possession. The Muskies got possession and took the ball into the Indians zone and Kariwate Mitchell put the ball past Indians netminder Alex Fortier just 24 seconds into the game.
Then a minute later, Colin “Joe” Hall made it 2-0 for the Muskies. The Indians seemed to lose their composure, but quickly regained it. Ben Green scored at 3:32 to make it 2-1. The score wouldn’t change until midway through the period when Travis Thompson gave the Muskies a 3-1 lead at 11:09. Indians captain Eddy Dickson scored a beauty on a jumping one-timer at 13:21 on a pass from Cole McComber making it 3-2. At 14:48 Hall gave the Muskies a 4-2 lead. With 2:33 left in the period Winston Goodleaf scored to bring the Indians to within one to close out the period.
Then, just 37 seconds into the second Goodleaf scored to lock up the score at 4-4. Indians rookie defenseman Logan Kane then scored to give the Indians a 5-4 lead. The Muskies were quick to respond with three unanswered goals from Hall and Raweras Mitchell (2) to give the Muskies a 7-5 lead. Charlie Goodleaf and Dickson both scored to close out the period with a 7-7 tie.
The Indians came out strong in the third period with Kane and Cody Delormier scoring five seconds apart at 1:32 and 1:37 to give the Indians a 9-7 lead. Jim Barnes brought the Muskies to within one at 2:31, then Hall tied it up at 9-9 when he scored at 4:54. Kane scored his third of the night at 6:25 to give the Indians a 10-9 lead. Thompson locked it up at 10-10 at 8:13.
At 11:03 Kane scored his fourth of the game to give the Indians a 11-10 lead. Kanes goal proved to be the game winner. Green scored two more to close out the game.

Indians vs Thunderbirds game cancelled, to be rescheduled
2009/05/25
Due to the roadwork this past weekend on the Mercier Bridge the game between the Caughnawaga Indians and the Akwesasne Thunderbirds had to be cancelled and rescheduled. The game will now be played on Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m. at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.
Prior to Saturday’s scheduled 8 p.m. start there were only 4 Thunderbirds players at the KSC. After checking with the rulebook, league officials, referees and Indians’ management agreed to give the Thunderbirds an additional 30 minutes to arrive. By 8:30 several more players arrived at the KSC, but not enough to field a complete squad.
It was at this point that it was decided that the game would be rescheduled. Indians coach Eric McComber decided that he would give some players to the Thunderbirds and an exhibition game would be played. The resulting game ended in a 10-10 tie. And as a result of the game change, league officials are asking players to use alternate routes to get to Kahnawake. Players from Akwesasne should go through Valleyfield and those players from the Montreal area should go by the Champlain Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Kahnawake Mohawks, the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League defending champions, traveled to Massena to take on the Muskies. Going into the game the Muskies sat on top of the Three Nations Lacrosse League with a 4-2 record. This was the first time the two teams met each other and many people were anticipating a great game.
However, the Mohawks proved to be too strong for the Muskies, downing them by a score of 20-4. Scoring for the Muskies were Colin Hall, Kariwate Mitchell, Raweras Mitchell and Jeff Slack. Leading the charge for the Mohawks were Callum Crawford with five goals and four assists. Louis Alfred also netted four and added one helper. Lance Mitchell also added seven points (three goals, four assists). Also scoring for the Mohawks were Tontie McComber (two goals, three assists), Curry Rice (two goals, three assists), Al Jones (two goals, two assists), Greg Diabo (one goal, one assist) and Ian Crawford (one goal, one assist).
On Friday night the Muskies will travel to the Kahnawake Sports Complex to take on the Caughnawaga Indians at 8 p.m. The Indians will then take on the Mohawks on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the KSC. The game will be broadcast on K103.

Mohawks take round two from Indians
The Kahnawake Mohawks improved to a perfect 4-0 record to stay on top of the standings of the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League after downing the Caughnawaga Indians 13-7, Saturday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex.
The Indians also lost one of their top offensive players in Kaniat Deer, who is sixth in scoring with 20 points, after he was levied a six game suspension. Late in the third period Deer and Mohawks defenseman DJ Serr were battling for position in front of the Mohawks net. Deer then turned around and headbutted Serr and then punched him while he was still on the floor.
Deer was ejected from the game and given an attempt to injure penalty and a gross misconduct.
Lance Mitchell opened the scoring at 4:20 of the first period as Callum Crawford set him up. Mohawks captain Louis Alfred gave his team a 2-0 lead at 8:39 of the first. Caughnawaga’s Heath Bordeau scored his first of the season at 9:37 to make it 2-1. Crawford gave the Mohawks a 3-1 lead at 12:12. The Mohawks would score two more (Curry Rice and Al Jones) before the Indians would respond. Winston Goodleaf and Eddy Dickson scored 13 seconds a part to make it 5-3. Crawford would close out the scoring for the period for Mohawks at 17:35. The Mohawks held a 6-3 lead going into the first intermission.

With just 1:03 left in the second period Jonathan Kane scored for the Indians to make it 8-4 to close out the second period.
It took more than five minutes for someone to score in the third period. At 5:40 Indians’ Kaniat Deer netted his first of the game to make it 8-5. Then just 42 seconds later Chad Norton scored to bring the Indians to within two at 8-6. Rice then scored his third of the game to make it 9-7 at 8:33. Crawford’s fourth of the game extended the Mohawks lead to 10-6 at 9:43. Indians rookie Ashennontie Diabo scored at 14:12 to bring the Indians to within two at 10-7. Mohawks draw first blood !
Greg Horn (http://www.kahnawakenews.com) - 5/4/2009
The Kahnawake Mohawks and the Caughnawaga Indians renewed their heated rivalry in the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League Saturday night. The Indians came into the contest sporting a record of 1-0-1 and were looking to hand the Mohawks their first loss of the season.
Just 2:48 into the game Indians sniper Ben Green opened the scoring, with assists going to rookie Logan Kane and Cody Delormier. Less than a minute later at 3:33 Green notched his second of the night (from Eddy Dickson and Chad Norton), making it 2-0 for the Indians.
The Mohawks were quick to strike back with rookie Markie Kirby netting his first of the game, which was set up by Louis Alfred and Curtis Diabo at 6:05. Just 27 seconds later Greg Diabo evened the score off a pass from Al Jones. The Mohawks took the lead on a goal by Christ Lahache, with assists going to Tontie McComber and DJ Serr at 6:42.
Seventeen seconds later Dickson (Padraic McKendry) tied things at 3-3. Then at 8:59 the Indians took the lead at 4-3 on a goal by Kaniat Deer, from Brock Freeman and Alex Fortier. Curtis Diabo tied it back up at 4-4 at 9:54. Then both Ian Crawford and Jones (Alfred, McComber) scored to round out the period. At the end of the first the Mohawks were leading 6-4.
This was also the first meeting these two teams where fighting has been allowed in the game. And the teams didn’t disappoint the fans. Early into the game the Indians’ Charlie Goodleaf and the Mohawks’ Carl Horn squared off. Then midway through the period Kerry Goodleaf and Curtis Diabo tussled. Kerry was ejected from the game following the fight for reportedly spitting at the referee. He was also levied a four game suspension for his actions. Indians’ Kirby Joe Diabo also had to leave the game after he was on the receiving end of a devastating hit from Chucky McComber.
The Mohawks continued to extend their lead in the second period. At 1:26 of the second Tontie McComber (Crawford) made it 7-4. But the Indians were quick to come back and got two goals from Green and Kane to bring the Indians to within one, at 7-6. Curtis Diabo gave the Mohawks a two-goal cushion on a pass from Markie Kirby. Charlie Goodleaf then put the Indians back to within one at 7:22, but at 9:26 Curry Rice gave the Mohawks a two goal lead again making it 9-7.
Green then scored two goals 21 seconds a part, at 15:59 and 16:20, to even things out at 9-9. At 17:23 Logan Kane gave the Indians the lead, but Curry Rice tied it up again at 17:32. The second period ended tied 10-10.
The back-and-forth action continued into the third period. Curry Rice made it 11-10 at 2:37 on a pass from Curtis Diabo. Winston Goodleaf tied it up for the Indians at 3:29. Curtis Diabo then netted two at 3:35 and 3:49 to give the Mohawks the lead at 13-11. That was it for the scoring for quite some time. Then at 17:27 Freeman made it 13-12. Right off the ensuing face-off Louis Alfred passed it to Tontie McComber who ran in and scored at 17:35 to make it 14-12.
But the Indians didn’t stop there. Indians veteran Chad Norton scored back-to-back goals at 18:10 and 18:59 to tie it at 14-14. It looked like this contest was going to overtime. With less then a minute left in the period the Indians fired the ball down the floor and it looked like Dickson was going have a breakaway, but he mishandled the ball. Mohawks goaltender Peter Paul scrambled out of his net and raced Dickson to the loose ball about 40 feet from the net.
It was a gamble that paid off. As he dove for the ball he was able to pass it up the floor to Markie Kirby who buried it at 19:25 to give the Mohawks the win at 15-14.
The Indians next take to the floor on Friday, May 8 at the Kahnawake Sports Complex when they take on the Cornwall Island Redman of the Three Nations Lacrosse League at 8 p.m. The Mohawks next play on Saturday, May 16 against the Indians at 8 p.m.
